Introducing Billy Lockett
I came across talented Northampton singer/songwriter Billy Lockett by chance via Twitter. Social networking is a great tool at times! The son of artist John Luce Lockett – who produced the fantastic painting above – Billy cites artists such as Radiohead and Massive Attack as influences for his musing’s as a musician, alongside more contemporary acts like Foals, Little Comets, and Bright Eyes. There is a certain depth and quality to the lyrics that have sprung to the fore, alongside some catchy melodies.
It can sometimes be all too easy to fall into a trap as both an avid listener to music and a pretentious critic to overlook the more commercially viable artists such as Billy. I have garnered a lot of pleasure over the past week or so listening and growing to understand the depth of feeling behind the songs. Having recently been chosen as BBC Introducing Artist of The Week, Billy has a whole new legion of fans out there.
I’m sure that in the next few months he will develop rapidly as an artist. What I hope more than anything else is that while riding the rollercoaster, people dig that little bit deeper to discover the real talent that lies beneath the surface of both the current single ‘Balance’ and the rest of his impressive catalogue. I particularly like ‘Advertise’ from the St Pancras Station Session Billy performed in the summer. Take the time to check him out via the links below and when he is all over billboards next summer drop me a line!
